Island Mine Campground

Island Mine is a small, inland backcountry campground on the Island Mine Trail, about half a mile south of its junction with the Greenstone Ridge Trail. It suits hikers crossing the island who want an overnight stop in the woods; it isn't a shoreline camp or a big-view destination. There are four individual tent sites and two group sites, with no shelters.

The Little Siskiwit River is south of camp and is the natural water source, but it can run low or dry up. Don't count on collecting water here: carry enough from an earlier stop, and treat anything you gather. Check current park conditions before you set out.

There's one food-storage locker, a standing grill, and an outhouse. Overnight permits are required. Parties of six or fewer choose from available sites on arrival; groups of seven or more need reservations. From June 1 through Labor Day, the consecutive-stay limit is three nights. Keep food, trash, and scented items in the locker or animal-resistant containers.

The Island Mine operated from 1873 to 1875 during Isle Royale's mining revival, and the NPS identifies Island Mine as the county seat of Isle Royale County. That's the mining story behind this trail camp's name.
