Overview

This is a short, rewarding out-and-back from Windigo to the Grace Creek Overlook—about 3.6 miles total (1.8 miles each way) and typically 2–4 hours round trip. Expect a moderate experience: the distance is easy, but the tread is narrow and uneven. The overlook itself is a broad, rocky outcropping with big-water views down to Grace Creek and out toward Grace Beach, Grace Harbor, and Lake Superior.

Route and Terrain

Start near Windigo on the Feldtmann Lake Trail (trailhead southwest of the Windigo Marina, near the seaplane dock). The path initially parallels Washington Harbor before turning inland and gradually climbing. The trail surface is natural and narrow (about 18 inches wide) with rocks and roots underfoot; footing—not mileage—is what slows most hikers. You’ll cross a footbridge over Grace Creek, then continue to a short, signed spur for the overlook. Return the same way.

Views and Wildlife

The payoff is a sweeping vista from exposed rock over Grace Creek and the harbor complex, with Lake Superior beyond—classic west-end scenery in a compact package. Keep an eye out for wildlife along the way; moose are occasionally seen, and the overlook is a good place to quietly watch and listen for bird activity below.

Best Time to Hike

Spring through fall is prime. Spring often means more reliable stream flow and wider views before full leaf-out. Fall can deliver color but may bring lower water levels in the creek. Isle Royale is generally not accessible in winter due to closure and harsh conditions.

Tips and Essentials

  • Wear sturdy footwear; the narrow, rooty, rocky tread demands attention.
  • Carry water; streams tend to be most reliable in spring. If you pull from natural sources, be prepared to treat it.
  • Watch for the signed spur to the overlook off the Feldtmann Lake Trail.
  • Pets are not permitted on park trails. No trail-specific permit is needed for a day hike; standard park entrance fees apply. Backpackers continuing beyond Windigo need an overnight permit.

How It Fits Into a Bigger Trip

This outing doubles as an excellent shakeout hike if you’re based at Windigo or starting a longer west-end itinerary. The Feldtmann Lake Trail is also part of a well-known multi-day loop connecting Feldtmann Ridge and the Greenstone Ridge; the overlook is a highlight early on that bigger route.

Pros

  • Big-lake views for a short round-trip from Windigo
  • Often quieter than the busier ridge routes nearby

Cons

  • Narrow, rooty tread (~18 inches) slows progress
  • Grace Creek water levels can be low in fall

Parking

Begin at Windigo; walk from the marina/seaplane dock area to the Feldtmann Lake Trailhead southwest of the marina.

Caution

Uneven, narrow tread with rocks and roots; trail steepens inland. Overlook is on exposed rock. Seasonal water reliability—bring and/or treat your own.
