About Jasper Lake

Jasper Lake isn’t your typical deep mountain lake—it’s a broad, shallow widening of the Athabasca River right off Highway 16. What makes it special is the Jasper Lake Sand Dunes, the only sand-dune ecosystem in the Canadian Rockies. When water levels drop, the lake reveals wide sand flats framed by big valley peaks.

This is a roadside stop with basic pullouts rather than a developed recreation area. Parking is limited and informal. One pullout has a washroom and a simple bench, but don’t count on services elsewhere—bring water and snacks. Expect some traffic noise given the highway and rail corridor.
