Founded in 1813 as a provisioning depot and later known as Jasper’s House (after postmaster Jasper Hawes), this post was a key staging point for traders, voyageurs, missionaries, Indigenous travelers, and artists. Activity dwindled in the late 1800s; it was designated a National Historic Site in 1924 to recognize its role in opening travel across the Rockies.
