Anbangbang Billabong Walk

A calm, green-tinged billabong ringed by paperbark forest and savanna woodlands, with the sandstone escarpment of Burrungkuy (Nourlangie) forming the backdrop. It’s classic Top End scenery—open water, birdlife, and big rock views without a climb.

Start at the Anbangbang Billabong car park in the Burrungkuy (Nourlangie) area. This is an easy, mostly flat 2.5 km / 1.55 mi loop on a compacted dirt track; allow about 1 hour, especially if you stop to watch wildlife. The loop is the billabong circuit—Nawurlandja Lookout is a separate nearby walk, not part of this route.

Birdlife is the headline: look for Magpie Geese, whistling ducks, egrets, and, with luck, brolgas around the shallows. Agile wallabies may graze near the edges. Interpretive signs explain the wetland ecology and the area’s continuing cultural importance to Bininj/Mungguy, who have long used plants here for food, tools, shelter, and medicine.

Part of the walk is wheelchair accessible, including the path to the picnic-table area, but accessibility and the extent of the open track vary with water levels. Kakadu park passes are required. Bring water, sun protection, binoculars, and insect repellent. Check Kakadu’s access information before setting out because the walk can open in stages during the dry season.

Crocodiles may be present in the billabong. Stay on the marked track, keep well back from the water’s edge, and follow all warning signs and closures.
