About Sandy Billabong

A quiet bush campground tucked beside a classic Top End waterhole, Sandy Billabong is the kind of place people come to slow down, watch the light change, and listen to birds. It sits about 6 km past Muirella Park near the Burrungkuy (Nourlangie) region, reached by a dry-season track best tackled with 4WD/AWD. Parks Australia even calls it one of the prettiest camping spots in the park.

You’re camping right on the edge of a billabong, with big skies, paperbarks and open savanna all around. It’s blissfully low-key and often quiet, which is rare this close to Kakadu’s core highlights. Tips for visiting Sandy Billabong

Aim for dawn or late afternoon—birdlife and soft light are best then.

Camping & facilities

Sandy Billabong is a basic bush campground. Don’t expect much in the way of infrastructure: bring all drinking water, food and camping gear. There are no showers, and facilities (if any) are minimal. If you prefer more amenities, Muirella Park nearby is the serviced option.
