Motor Car Falls Walk

Motor Car Falls Walk is a moderate, out-and-back hike to one of Kakadu’s most reliable wet‑season waterfalls. It’s 7.5 km/4.7 miles return from the Yurmikmik Walks carpark, generally taking around 2 hours of moving time, plus whatever you want to spend swimming.

What you’re in for: a well‑marked track across open woodland and grassland, then into lush monsoon forest before the finale—Motor Car Falls pouring into a deep, clear plunge pool rimmed with boulders. Expect little shade on most of the approach, then a short section of boulder‑hopping/rock scrambling to reach the water. The payoff is a tranquil swim spot that sees fewer people than Kakadu’s headline falls.

Keep your eyes open for wildlife. The southern hills and ridges here are home to antilopine wallaroos, and birders sometimes spot Gouldian finches. There’s even a noted bowerbird nest along the track. In the pool itself, you may see long‑neck turtles, small fish, and cherubin.

Best time to hike: the wet season (roughly November–April) is when the falls are at their most spectacular and the monsoon forest is at peak green. In the dry season (May–October), walking is easier and less humid, but the flow can taper to a trickle by late dry—still a pleasant swim, just less drama. Start early for cooler temps and gentler light, and bring serious sun protection because the track is exposed.

Logistics: start at the Yurmikmik Walks carpark (about 140 km south of Jabiru; access via Gimbat Road, roughly 22 km from the Kakadu Highway turnoff). There’s signage and a picnic area. A 4WD is recommended, especially after rain. A Kakadu National Park Pass is required. Always follow Crocwise signage before entering the water—this spot is popular for swimming, but conditions can change.
