Pros & cons
PROS
- Alfresco dining featuring WA produce and native bush foods
- Fully licensed bar plus pre‑order picnic lunches
CONS
- Dinner bookings essential with limited seating
- Seasonal hours; dinner service pauses mid‑Nov to late Feb
Overview
Set at Karijini Eco Retreat on the edge of Joffre Gorge, this open‑air spot leans into place—think native bush ingredients, Western Australian produce, and outback sunsets over red rock while you eat. It’s relaxed but purposeful, occasionally with live‑music evenings, and the bar is fully licensed.
What You’ll Eat & Drink
- Breakfast: continental or hot cooked.
- Lunch: dine‑in (seasonal) or packed picnic lunches.
- Dinner: à‑la‑carte with an outback twist, plus desserts, quality teas and coffees.
- A crowd‑pleaser mentioned often: seared gnocchi with native‑sage caramelised butter.
Picnic Lunches (Super Handy for Gorge Days)
Packed lunches include a fresh wrap, fruit and a muesli bar (AUD $25 per person). You can add an insulated Karijini picnic bag for AUD $30. Pre‑order by 6:00 pm the day before at reception.
Hours and Seasonality
- April–October: breakfast 7:00–9:00 am; lunch 12:00–2:00 pm; dinner 5:30–8:00 pm.
- March and Nov 1–15: breakfast as above; picnic‑only lunches; dinner 5:30–6:30 pm (pre‑book essential).
- Mid‑Nov to late Feb: usual dinner service pauses; continental breakfast and packed lunches still available. Operations are seasonal—confirm exact dates and times for your trip.
Reservations & How It Works
Dinner bookings are essential for Eco Tent/Cabin guests and should be made before arrival; walk‑ups are often turned away. Campground guests may get limited dinner pre‑bookings from 10 days out. There’s also a daily takeaway Burger Bar for campers, and communal Bush Kitchens with BBQs (bring your own utensils, crockery and cutlery).
Good to Know
The retreat is remote and intentionally low‑impact: expect limited mobile data. It’s a cashless setup—bring a card. Shared ablutions at the retreat have flushing toilets and hot showers. Wildlife does wander through (the odd dingo, bungarras); keep food secured and stick to paths—spinifex is sharp.
Best Time to Visit
Aim for April–October when full dinner service runs and evenings are cooler—book the 5:30–6:30 pm window if you want golden light before dusk, or a later seating for stargazing after. In shoulder/low season, plan around shorter dinner hours or the dinner pause and lean on the picnic lunches.
