Perched on the rim of the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes, the Robert F. Griggs Visitor Center is where Katmai’s volcanic story clicks. From the deck and surrounding area you get sweeping views across the ash- and pumice-filled valley born from the 1912 Novarupta eruption. It’s also the starting point for the Ukak Falls/Ukak River Trail, which drops you right into the stark, otherworldly landscape.
Katmai was originally protected for its world-class volcanism, and this is the best single place to grasp that story. Even if bear viewing is your headline, the geology here is the park’s foundation—and many visitors call this tour a surprise highlight of their trip.

Plan a full day: do the valley tour in the morning/early afternoon, then head back to Brooks to watch brown bears along the river when activity picks up later in the day during peak salmon runs.
