Overview
Ukak Falls is a backcountry waterfall tucked into the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes—the surreal ash-filled basin born from the colossal 1912 Novarupta eruption. That eruption blanketed the region in pyroclastic flows and ash; for decades afterward, heat vented through steaming fissures, giving the valley its name.
If volcanic scenery and geologic storytelling are your thing, this is a uniquely rewarding stop—more about landscape and solitude than amenities. It’s not as structured or easy as the bear platforms at Brooks, but that’s exactly the appeal for many.

Plan on a full day: the concessioner’s valley tour is the simplest way to reach the Ukak River Trail waterfall from Brooks Camp.
Expect zero services at the falls—carry water, layers, and a small repair/first-aid kit.
Build in weather buffer time for floatplane logistics to and from Brooks.

Expect a stark, colorful volcanic landscape with ashy river water, wildflowers in season, and a waterfall along the Ukak River Trail. Streams have carved deep canyons into the eruption deposits, exposing bands of ash and tuff that make the valley look almost otherworldly.
Treat Ukak Falls as a backcountry destination. Don’t expect a parking lot, marked trailhead, or restrooms at the falls itself. If you want reliable facilities, plan to base out of Brooks Camp and use services there before and after your valley time.
Katmai is famous for brown bears and salmon, and wildlife can turn up anywhere—be bear aware at all times. Many trips through Brooks include a mandatory bear-safety briefing before you’re free to walk local trails and platforms; bring that same caution and preparedness to the valley.
