Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge

Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge is a remote wilderness lodge on Pedersen Lagoon, in an Alaska Native-owned wildlife sanctuary inside Kenai Fjords National Park. Sixteen guest cabins sit among the coastal spruce and connect to the main lodge by elevated boardwalks. This is a booked overnight stay, not a drive-up stop: the only way in is by boat from Seward.

The transfer is part of the experience, with coastal scenery and wildlife viewing along the way. The lodge works best as a multi-day base for exploring the lagoon and coast, rather than a quick detour. The operator recommends arranging a night in Seward beforehand because guests have an early boat check-in.

Activities include guided sea kayaking in Aialik Bay, canoeing on Pedersen Lagoon, hikes, interpretive nature walks and beachcombing. The daily choices are organized at the lodge, so this suits visitors who want a guided outdoor stay. If paddling and muddy trails aren't your idea of a break, the remote setting and boat logistics may outweigh the appeal.

Cabins have private bathrooms, porches, heat and electricity. The main lodge has a dining room, a lounge with a wood stove and a beer-and-wine bar; meals are part of the lodge experience, though this isn't a drive-up restaurant. There is also a cedar sauna for unwinding after time outdoors.

There is no internet or cell service at the lodge. Download what you'll need before leaving Seward and plan the stay around being out of contact. From the lodge and its deck, the lagoon and nearby Pedersen Glacier make the setting as much a part of the stay as the cabins.
