Northeastern Glacier Beach

Northeastern Glacier Beach is a long, flat landing and camping beach in Northwestern Fiord. It’s a coastal stop for a kayak or water-taxi trip, not a roadside pullout. At low tide, reaching a suitable camp spot can mean a long carry, so keep your camp and gear well above the high-tide line.

A food-storage locker sits just into the alders near the north end. Use it and follow coastal backcountry food and waste rules; a brown bear got food from kayakers here in 1999. Nesting shorebirds, especially semipalmated plovers, may try to draw you away from a nest. Give them space and don’t follow.

The inland hike toward Northeastern Glacier may require wading across the glacial outwash stream. These crossings have no bridges, and silty water can hide depth, ice, and debris. Treat the crossing as a serious backcountry decision and get current local advice before attempting it.

From shore, frame the outwash channel as it leads toward the glacier; the stream gives the ice a sense of scale and shows how the landing fits into the valley. A tight shot of the glacier misses the beach’s unusual mix of shoreline, forest, and ice.
