Knockreer House is Killarney National Park’s Education Centre, standing on a rise above Killarney. The best public visit is the estate paths and hilltop panorama over Lough Leane and the MacGillycuddy Reeks, not a promised tour inside the house: routine walk-in access to the centre hasn’t been confirmed. The attraction is listed as dog-friendly, and free parking is noted, though its location and capacity aren’t clear.

The Knockreer Circular is an easy 5 km loop with 45 m of elevation and an official estimate of about two hours. It follows the River Deenagh, crosses bridges and open parkland, then climbs toward the estate’s hilltop viewpoint. From Kings Bridge, opposite St Mary’s Cathedral, Deenagh Lodge marks the entrance and the house is a short uphill walk. One official route start is the current Killarney House and Gardens on the town side; that’s a separate attraction from Knockreer House.

Follow the hilltop pathTake the branch from the circular walk up to the viewpoint.

Take the branch from the circular walk up to the viewpoint. The panorama opens over Lower Lake, also called Lough Leane, and the surrounding countryside, with the MacGillycuddy Reeks as the mountain backdrop. Keep some lake and mountain in the same photo to show how the estate sits above the town.

A house with a different historyKnockreer House stands on the site of the original Killarney House, which burned in 1913.

Knockreer House stands on the site of the original Killarney House, which burned in 1913. The present building is the park’s Education Centre, described as the last of the Kenmare mansions; it isn’t the surviving Killarney House and Gardens farther east. That name mix-up is easy to make, so navigate to Knockreer House or Kings Bridge for this side of the estate.

The Kenmare estateKnockreer was part of the Kenmare Estate, laid out by Valentine Brown, third Viscount Kenmare.

Knockreer was part of the Kenmare Estate, laid out by Valentine Brown, third Viscount Kenmare. The centre now hosts environmental learning for school groups, including nature study and activities such as pond dipping and scavenger hunts; don’t assume the teaching rooms operate as a public museum. At Kings Bridge, the separate Deenagh Lodge tearoom occupies the 1834 gate lodge on the approach, rather than a café inside Knockreer House.
