Trail guide
The Fossa Way is a 2.8-mile (4.5 km) one-way walk on a mostly paved, shared path from King’s Bridge opposite St Mary’s Cathedral to the off-road path’s end by Fossa. Allow about 1¼ hours on foot. It’s a low-relief town-to-village walk, not a remote hike. If you need to get back to Killarney on foot, plan for about 5.6 miles total or arrange a pickup.
There are several paths at the King’s Bridge entrance to Killarney House and Gardens; take the right-hand path marked The Fossa Way. The paved route follows the Deenagh River through the park, passes Castlerosse Hotel and the golf-club entrance, then enters woodland toward Fossa. At Castlerosse, stay on the marked path through the grounds and follow the turn back onto The Fossa Way. Walkers share the path with cyclists, so follow the cycle signs, including any one-way sections.
The main route is a simple through-walk. If you want more views, the separate Knockreer paths open across Lough Leane toward the MacGillycuddy Reeks. Red deer and Kerry cattle are sometimes seen in the parkland; late September and October is rutting season, so give deer plenty of space. The 5 km Knockreer Circular Walk and its views are a separate walk, not part of this route’s distance.
Roadside parking by Deenagh Lodge is reported near the start, but can be busy in summer and during cathedral services; no dedicated Fossa Way car park was confirmed. Deenagh Lodge has a summer coffee shop by the town end. At Fossa, The Golden Nugget is across the N72 from the path exit, so take care crossing. Dogs must be kept on a lead within the National Park; the rule for the hotel and golf-club grounds beyond it wasn’t confirmed.
The route begins at the King’s Bridge entrance to Killarney House and Gardens. Killarney House dates to the late 18th century and began as the stable block for the first Kenmare House. The restored gardens make an easy extra wander before or after the walk; they aren’t included in the route distance.
