Hiking Kerry Way: Killarney to Torc Waterfall

Kerry Way’s Killarney-to-Torc stage is a 4.7-mile (7.5-km) one-way walk from town to Torc Waterfall, via Castlelough Bay and Muckross. The route is graded easy; allow about two hours on foot, plus time for Muckross House or the lake. Plan your return before you start: walking back makes it about 9.3 miles. Dogs are welcome in the national park but must stay on a lead. The route map also cautions that a mapped path alone does not establish a right of way, so follow the waymarks and any local access notices.

The walk starts at the Muckross Road end of Killarney, following streets past guesthouses before crossing the River Flesk. For about 1.5 km, it uses a gravel path set back from the road and shared with horse-drawn jaunting cars. After that, the route turns into Bourn Vincent Memorial Park and follows Castlelough Bay. Gaps in the trees open views across Lough Leane to the Shehy Mountains, with Osprey Rock and Friar’s Island in the foreground. Those shoreline gaps are the best place to frame the islands with the mountains behind them.

Near Muckross House, the route returns to surfaced paths, passes grazing fields with Muckross Lake to the west, then cuts through a copse and goes under the N71. Muckross House is a 19th-century Victorian landmark; touring inside is a separate visit. The final short approach reaches the foot of Torc Waterfall. The steeper steps and circular walks above the main landing belong to other Torc routes, not this town-to-waterfall stage. Rocks around the falls can be slippery when wet.
