Muckross Old Boathouse and Dundag Pier is a small stone boathouse and landing on Muckross Lake, in front of Muckross House. Boats leave here for Dinis Cottage and the Meeting of the Waters; come for the lake trip and the captain’s local commentary, not a long stop on shore. Plan about 45 to 60 minutes, with stopovers shaping the timing; each boat holds up to 12 passengers. Service is seasonal and weather-dependent, so check whether boats are running before you set out. Bicycles can go aboard too, which can make the crossing useful as part of a ride.

The route gives you views of Muckross House, Dundag Point, Torc Mountain, Devil’s Island, the Eagle’s Nest, and the Purple and Shehy mountains. When water levels allow, boats can pass beneath Bricín Bridge into Lough Leane. For a photo, frame the pointed boathouse doorway and stone landing with the lake in view; a tight shot of the wall misses what makes this waterfront stop distinctive.

One of the old boathouses here is known as the “Wet Boathouse”; it is more than 150 years old and built from local sandstone. Dundag comes from the Irish Dún an Daig, translated as “wooden fort” or “fort of the wood.”

Trips can include stopovers at Dinis Cottage and the Meeting of the Waters. Dinis was built in the mid-18th century as a hunting lodge and is now used as tea rooms, making it the route’s natural food stop. The Meeting of the Waters is where Killarney’s lakes join, below the 17th-century Old Weir Bridge.

Dundag Point is a Carboniferous limestone promontory that supports natural yew woodland. Red and sika deer, wild goats, otters, herons, cormorants, ducks, swans and sea eagles have all been seen along the boat route; treat wildlife as a bonus rather than a promise.

The Old Boathouse Trail is a separate outing, not the pier’s access path: it is an easy, mostly flat 1 km walk with about 10 m of ascent. It skirts Dundag Point and continues to Dundag Beach; the trail starts farther along the road to Torc from Mossy Woods. The wider Muckross House visitor site has separate parking and a Garden Restaurant, so treat those as facilities for the house rather than amenities at the landing.
