Glenridding: Ullswater Shore and Steamers

Overview

About Ullswater Steamers

Why stop

  • Mountain views from the water without a fell climb
  • Boats link scenic walks and lakeside villages

Heads up

  • Weather can make open-deck sailing cold and wet
  • Busy sailings can make the best seats hard to find
Ullswater Steamers turn a lake view into a moving experience. From the deck, the shape of Ullswater keeps changing: wooded bays, fell slopes, islands, and villages slide past while you stay on the water. The five-boat heritage fleet gives the trip more character than a generic sightseeing cruise, and the indoor saloons and sheltered decks keep it workable when the Lake District weather turns.

Before you go

Best time to go

Early morning and late afternoon usually bring softer light, better reflections, and a calmer feel. Summer weekends and school holidays can be busy, so arrive early if sitting outside or travelling on a particular sailing matters. The open deck can be cold and wet even on a bright day; bring a waterproof layer and something warm. Spring adds the chance to see the daffodils along the west shore, while broken cloud often gives the fells more shape than a completely clear sky.

The four piers at Pooley Bridge, Howtown, Glenridding, and Aira Force make it easy to combine a cruise with the Ullswater Way. Ride one way and walk a section back, or use Howtown as a quiet starting point for the lakeshore route. Connections to Aira Force are seasonal, so treat that as a route choice that varies through the year rather than assuming every sailing serves it.

The service grew out of the mid-19th-century Ullswater Steam Navigation Company, which carried passengers, Royal Mail, slate, and lead from the Greenside mine. M.Y. Lady of the Lake, launched in 1877, is believed to be the world's oldest working passenger vessel. The boats now use diesel power, but the long working history is still part of what makes this an unusually satisfying way to see the valley.

What to expectCall ahead if you need wheelchair access.

Call ahead if you need wheelchair access. The heritage vessels and waterside boarding are not suitable for motorised wheelchairs or mobility scooters, although wheelchairs can be reserved.

  • Glenridding's main pier house has pay-and-display parking, toilets, light refreshments, indoor and outdoor seating, free Wi-Fi, and an 11kW EV charger. Boats have toilets, licensed bars, open decks, sheltered upper-deck seating, and indoor saloons.
  • Howtown has no car parking and very limited facilities. Space for bicycles and paddleboards is limited and allocated at the skipper's discretion, so passage is not guaranteed.
  • Dogs are welcome, but keep them on a short lead. They are not allowed on saloon seats or the outside upper decks.
