Guide
Displays trace the region from Indigenous habitation through the French and Indian War, the American Revolution and later centuries. Models show stockaded Fort George in 1759 and the 1758 radeau Land Tortoise. Look for the vessel’s gunport lid and an underwater photomosaic of its wreck; another model shows wreckage from one of Lake George’s armed 1756 sloops. A documentary film adds context.
The surrounding park is the site of the 1755 Battle of Lake George and later served as a fortified camp during the 1757 siege of Fort William Henry. During the Revolution, it became a military hospital and supply base. Ruins of the unfinished Fort George and other fortifications remain in the park.
One display represents a First Pennsylvania Battalion soldier who was stationed at Fort George and died of smallpox in the 1776 hospital. In 2026, the remains of 44 Continental soldiers and associated personnel who died at that hospital were reinterred on the grounds, connecting the exhibits to a specific place and time.
The center is stop 18 on the self-guided Lake George Colonial Wars Walking Tour. Pair the indoor exhibits with a walk through the grounds to see the historic setting they interpret.
