The Narrows Overlook is the first of three named roadside vistas on Prospect Mountain Veterans Memorial Highway, a 5.5-mile climb above Lake George. It looks across the lake’s southern end toward its islands and the mountains along the eastern shore. You can get the main view from the parking area, without adding a hike to the summit.

The view comes in layers: a grassy clearing and boulder at the edge of the pull-off, trees below, then a strip of water and low mountain ridges. A viewscope helps pick out details across the lake. For a photo, keep some of the grass or boulder in the foreground so the distant water has scale.

Make it part of the driveThe 5.

The 5.5-mile road connects three vista pull-offs, each with its own parking area; the drive to the upper lot takes about ten minutes from the entry booth, before you add time for stops. Access is seasonal, so check the operating schedule before planning around it. Pets aren’t allowed in the highway’s day-use area. The documented restroom is at the lower day-use area, not this overlook; food and supplies are available back in Lake George village.

Visitors first reached Prospect Mountain by incline railway, which opened in 1895 and carried them to a summit house for meals and dancing. It closed in 1903. The Veterans Memorial Highway opened in 1969, giving visitors a new way to reach the mountain.
