This mellow Adirondack ramble trades summits for serenity. Starting from the Black Mountain Trailhead on Pike Brook Road (the same lot used for Black Mountain), it’s roughly 2 miles one way to Lapland Pond, making it about 4 miles total as an out-and-back. Along the way you’ll cross several wooden bridges, skirt smaller ponds, and pass an extensive beaver pond before the trees open to a secluded shoreline.

Expect a classic backcountry footpath: mostly gentle grades on dirt with roots and the occasional rocky bit. The last approach near the pond can be wet or muddy, especially after rain. Despite the tame terrain, keep an eye on markers near stream crossings where the tread can feel faint in spots. Plan 2–3 hours total, more if you linger for lunch.

The reward is a peaceful, lightly used pond ringed by mountains and classic Adirondack scenery. A well‑maintained lean‑to sits right at the water, making this a stellar picnic or camping destination without the crowds. Watch and listen for water birds, scan the beaver pond for activity, and enjoy the quiet.

If you catch the Adirondacks in late spring through fall, this trail shines: lush greens in summer, and reflective foliage in autumn. After wet spells (or in spring) the route can be soggy—waterproof boots earn their keep. Bugs can be intense in late spring and early summer, so bring head nets or repellent.

Looking to go farther? From the same network you can link to other ponds like Millman, Fishbrook, or Greenland for a longer day. If you’re camping, remember the lean‑to is first‑come, first‑served; bring a tent as backup.

Best time to hike: Late spring through fall for comfortable temps and the best scenery. Aim for early morning or late afternoon for softer light on the water and an even higher chance of solitude.

Pros

  • Lean-to right on the shoreline for a comfy lunch or overnight
  • Low traffic and strong sense of solitude compared to nearby summits

Cons

  • Sections can be very wet and muddy after rain
  • Trail can feel faint near stream crossings—watch the markers

Parking

Park at the Black Mountain Trailhead on Pike Brook Road (near Huletts Landing); same lot used for Black Mountain.

Caution

Expect muddy/wet footing near the pond and after rain; some blazes/tread are faint near stream crossings. Bring bug protection in late spring and early summer.
