Trail guide
Leeming Jelliffe Preserve Trail is an easy, wooded out-and-back from Bluff Head Road to a Lake George overlook above the Narrows and Silver Bay. The 0.30-mile distance is round trip, about 0.15 mile each way. Allow around 15 minutes, plus time at the view. It is a good little stop when you want a lake outlook without committing to a longer hike.
The marked path winds through trees, rises and dips a little, then reaches stone steps and a rocky outcrop. The same path returns to the road, so the short climb comes again on the way back. At the overlook, include some of the stone in a photo with the water behind it; a frame of the distant hills alone misses the sense of standing on the outcrop.
The collapsed remains of a cabin sit near the viewpoint. Stay on the trail and leave the remains alone. The preserve is open year-round from dawn to dusk, and leashed dogs are allowed. Parking is limited at the Bluff Head Road entrance; use only the designated roadside area.
The Lake George Land Conservancy protected this 33.3-acre upland parcel in 2018. The preserve is named for William Leeming Jelliffe, whose family had roots in Huletts Landing going back to the early 1900s. The short route is the visitor's way into this wooded parcel, with an overlook above the lake.
