Summit Lake Ranger Station

This small log ranger cabin sits beside the Summit Lake Trailhead on Lassen Park Highway, near the middle of the park. The station is best known as the start of the Echo Lake Trail, a 4.4-mile round trip that takes about two to three hours. The cabin itself is not documented as a staffed visitor center, and public access to its exterior or interior is unclear, so don't plan on ranger services or going inside.

Built in 1926, the roughly 20-by-30-foot cabin was among the first three structures erected by the young National Park Service in the park, and it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its horizontal logs, notched corners and cedar-shake gable roof are the details to notice. If you can view it from public ground, step back far enough to show the long roofline and log walls together; a close crop loses the shape.

The trail climbs from Summit Lake through fir forest into manzanita. A view opens southwest toward Lassen Peak before the route continues to Echo Lake's shaded shore for a pause or swim. Nearby North and South campgrounds have seasonal drinking water and toilets, but those are separate facilities, not services at the station. Lassen Park Highway usually closes or becomes impassable under snow from about November through June, so check current road conditions before planning a cold-season visit.
