Summit Lake Loop

Summit Lake Loop is an easy 0.75-mile circuit around the shore, with very little climbing. It suits a short lake walk when you want Lassen Peak views without taking on a summit. Allow about 30 minutes, longer if you stop by the water.

At the loop junction just east of Summit Lake North Campground, go clockwise along the east shore first. This is the best side for seeing Lassen Peak over the lake. Stay on the Summit Lake path at the Echo Lake and Twin Lakes branch. The short Summit Lake Amphitheater spur rejoins ahead; keep to the lakeshore fork to stay on the circuit. On the south side, follow the shoreline trail by South Campground and turn right at the two campground splits. The west shore leads back to North Campground. For a peak-and-water photo, include some of the lake in the foreground; reflections depend on calm water.

North and South campgrounds both give you a short approach to the loop. The North lakeside picnic area has day-use parking, tables, and a swimming area. At the north end, follow the shore through the picnic area or use the campground entrance road to reconnect with the loop. Stay on roads, gravel, and rock-lined paths around campground plantings. Campground access and services are seasonal, so check current access before you go. Starting from the Summit Lake Ranger Station adds about 0.4 mile each way, making the outing roughly 1.6 miles round trip.

Summit Lake is one of the park’s better birding spots. Mosquitoes can be numerous around the marshy shore in June and July as snow melts, then ease as water dries later in summer and fall. The lake stays cool to cold, even when a swim looks inviting.
