Lake Helen

Overview

Lake Helen is a compact, high-elevation lake tucked between Lassen Peak and the Bumpass Hell area. It’s a classic roadside stop: pull over, look up, and you get a postcard view of Lassen rising over blue water. Snow and ice can linger well into summer, which only adds to the alpine vibe.

What You’ll See

On calm days, the surface turns mirror-like with Lassen Peak reflected in the water. You’ll get continuous views along a stretch of the park highway, with easy pullouts for quick photo stops.

Facilities and Setup

There’s a small picnic area on the lake’s southeast corner with several picnic tables and two vault toilets. Parking is limited—just that small lot and a few designated pullouts along the highway. There’s no drinking water here, so pack your own.

Swimming and Safety

Swimming is allowed along the south shore, but this is a very cold, deep lake year-round. Floating devices are not permitted. Snow and lake ice can persist into summer—stay off the ice. Conditions at this elevation change fast, with strong sun, wind, and chilly temps possible even in peak season. Protect the fragile shoreline, stay off vegetation, and pack out your trash. Give wildlife space and never feed them.

Nearby and Logistics

Lake Helen sits between two of the park’s marquee trailheads—Lassen Peak and Bumpass Hell—so it’s easy to pair a lake stop with a hike. Use those trailhead parking lots for those hikes; there’s no trailhead here and no campground at Lake Helen. Overnight parking or car camping isn’t allowed in pullouts or at the picnic area.

Best Time to Visit

Access here can open late and close early due to snow, so always check current road and trail status in shoulder seasons. For photos, aim for calm conditions to score those perfect reflections. Because parking is limited, a morning or late-day stop is your best bet to avoid the midday crunch.
