Trail guide
This is a 3.7-mile point-to-point hike from Terrace Lake Trailhead to Summit Lake Ranger Station, passing Terrace, Shadow, and Cliff lakes. A trailhead sign gives 3.7 miles to Summit Lake, matching the 3.65-mile mapped line; an older route map lists 4.6 miles, so allow a little extra time if you want a margin. The route loses about 1,370 feet overall, from roughly 8,050 to 6,690 feet. Allow about 2–3 hours and sort out the car shuttle before you start. If you want a return-to-car walk instead, the separate 3.4-mile out-and-back turns around at Cliff Lake.
The path drops quickly from the Terrace Lake turnout. At the early fork, keep right toward Terrace rather than taking the Hat Lake branch. The tread reaches Terrace Lake, then continues to Shadow and follows its shore. The drop to Shadow is steep; trekking poles help on that descent.
The standard lake walk turns back at Cliff Lake. The shuttle route continues through open woods and meadow, crossing the Hat Creek headwaters on its way to Summit Lake. There are some rolling stretches after the early descent, but the route trends downhill to the ranger-station access.
Terrace, Shadow, and Cliff lakes sit in cirques beneath Reading Peak’s north base. Terrace is a good place to look for cliff reflections when the water is calm. From Shadow’s west shore, Lassen Peak appears beyond the lake. Cliff Lake sits below a steep gray talus slope, a different, starker setting than the tree-lined shores at Terrace and Shadow.
Start at the limited roadside parking at Terrace Lake Trailhead on Lassen Peak Highway; finish at Summit Lake Ranger Station. The separate road connection between the two trail ends is about 6.8 miles. Cliff Lake Trailhead is marked no parking, so don’t leave a car there. Arrange a second vehicle or another return plan before setting out.
This high, north-facing route can hold snow into summer; its usual hiking season is roughly mid-July through October. Pets are not allowed on park hiking trails, except service animals.
