Nolin River Tailwater Recreation Area is a small US Army Corps of Engineers day-use area below Nolin River Dam, just outside Mammoth Cave National Park. The Nolin River flows from here toward the park and joins the Green River. This is the practical launch for a paddle into the park, continuing down the Nolin and then upstream on the Green to Houchin Ferry. If you aren't getting on the water, it's a simple fishing or picnic stop rather than a place that needs a long visit.

Before you get on the waterThis is moving water, not a calm float.

This is moving water, not a calm float. Rain or dam releases can raise the river by 20 to 50 feet over hours or days; swift currents, submerged trees and drifting debris are hazards. The removal of downstream Lock and Dam No. 6 after its 2016 failure also left lower water and faster currents. Check current levels and outflow before launching, and choose the trip only if you're comfortable paddling a changing river.

A paved boat ramp, restrooms, picnic tables, a playground and grills make this an easy place to launch or spend a short break. The group shelter can be reserved if you're gathering with others. The Nolin River itself is the draw: bring a fishing rod, a picnic, or a boat and use the access for the river.

Where “Nolin” comes fromThe name is usually traced to Benjamin Lynn, an early explorer and Kentucky militia member.

The name is usually traced to Benjamin Lynn, an early explorer and Kentucky militia member. The story goes that when Lynn became separated from his companions near the Green River, searchers returned saying “No Lynn”; the river took its name from that report. It is a memorable bit of local history to carry with you when the river opens out below the dam.
