Mammoth Dome is a named underground shaft on the Historic Cave Tour. A tall stair tower climbs through the chamber; 155 steps are at the dome, making this one of the route’s defining vertical stretches.
The full Historic Cave Tour takes about two hours over two miles, with 540 steps in total and several steep inclines. It is rated moderate, but there is no alternate route around the stairs, so think about whether your group is ready before booking.
Mammoth Dome is not a separate surface stop. You reach it by a guided cave tour that includes this section; the Visitor Center is where tickets are handled and tours depart. Tour offerings shift with the seasons, so reserve an itinerary that lists the Dome rather than assuming every tour passes it.
Keep the stair tower rising through the frame, with the cave wall around it. That shows the climb and the scale of the room together.
