Great Onyx Cave is a natural cave on Flint Ridge in Mammoth Cave National Park, visited on its own ranger-led lantern tour. It is separate from Mammoth Cave and is not known to connect to the Mammoth Cave System. Keep it on your list if you want a different cave experience; at 2¼ hours, it is a planned outing rather than a quick extra room.
The route is about one mile, takes 2¼ hours, and includes 82 stairs. It is a moderate tour. A park bus carries the group from the visitor center to the cave entrance and back, so start at the visitor center rather than navigating to the cave pin. The route is not step-free. Adults carry the gas lanterns, which can bother visitors with respiratory sensitivities.
The tour mixes stalactites and stalagmites with gypsum crystals and helictites. Look for the fine, twisting helictites among the larger formations; their sideways growth makes them easy to miss if you only scan the big chambers. Lantern light is part of the experience, giving the cave a more intimate feel than a fully lit underground walk.
Great Onyx has a history as a separate show cave, part of Kentucky's early competition to bring visitors underground. That history sits alongside the geology, giving the visit a human story as well as a look at the formations.
Tours run on a seasonal schedule, and reservations are strongly recommended. Arrive about 30 minutes early for parking, ticket pickup and a restroom stop at the visitor center; there is no restroom at the cave destination. The minimum tour age is six. Check the current tour calendar before building your day around it.
