More about Giant’s Coffin

Giant’s Coffin is a massive fallen limestone block on Mammoth Cave’s underground tour route, about 175 feet below the surface. People have stopped here for more than two centuries, but this isn’t a roadside stop: you need a ticket for a cave tour that includes it. The current Violet City Lantern Light itinerary names it; the landmark is also described on the Historic Tour route. Violet City lists 160 stairs and an easy rating, while the Historic Tour is a steeper 540-stair, moderate outing. Tour offerings change with the season, so check the itinerary for your date and reserve ahead; tours can sell out.

The Coffin is a huge piece of limestone that broke away and came to rest on the cave floor. Its edges have been rounded by water dissolving the rock. Blocks like this are part of how caves grow: as limestone loosens along cracks and layers, collapses can widen a passage and leave the kind of broad chamber you’re standing in.

From Steamboat to Giant’s CoffinThe earliest name visitors used for the block was Steamboat.

The earliest name visitors used for the block was Steamboat. By the 1840s, guides and visitors thought its long, rectangular shape looked more like a giant’s coffin, and that name stuck. The feature is still one of the landmarks people come to recognize on a cave visit.

You can see an old inscription on the stone for J. N. McDowell, M.D., dated 1839. It’s a small piece of the cave’s long visitor history. Marking cave walls became a federal offense after the park was established in 1941, so this early signature is treated as historic rather than an invitation to add your own.

Cave guides also told a legend about a kind giant named Cozad who befriended cave creatures and was laid to rest in a stone coffin. That’s folklore built around the formation’s name, not a documented account of a real person.

If your tour allows a moment for a photo, include some of the cave ceiling above the block so its long, fallen profile stays clear. The 1839 inscription is the detail to look for once you’ve seen the full boulder. Follow your guide’s instructions during the stop.
