Trail guide
Sloan's Crossing Pond Walk is a 0.4-mile loop on a wheelchair-accessible boardwalk around a marshy pond. Allow about 15 minutes for the lap, then longer if you stop at the overlooks or read the habitat panels. It's an easy, low-commitment nature stop; the point is to watch the pond, not rack up miles.
Two observation decks give the clearest views over the water. One sits near the start; the other is a short walk counterclockwise. Take a minute at each rather than expecting a broad view from every stretch of boardwalk. The deck rail and reeds also make a good frame for a pond photo.
Mammoth Cave's limestone landscape usually carries surface water underground, so Sloans Pond is a useful example of the park's ponds and upland swamps. Cattails help hold the bank together and filter incoming water. The park explains the area's karst, but the pond's specific formation has not been established as a sinkhole.
Look for turtles warming on sunny logs and scan the small island near the far end for the resident Canada goose. Frogs, red-winged blackbirds and other waterfowl are also noted here. Crayfish and dragonfly larvae live among the shallow water's leaf litter, an easy detail to miss if you hurry around the loop.
Start at Sloan's Crossing Trailhead, where a small lot and an accessible picnic area sit beside the boardwalk. Dogs are allowed on park surface trails, but must stay on a leash no longer than six feet. Remain on the boardwalk; don't wade or feed or disturb the wildlife.
