Brewster Hut

Brewster Hut is a serviced 12-bunk hut above State Highway 6 in the Makarora area of Mount Aspiring National Park. It's a worthwhile goal for fit, experienced trampers who want a night in open alpine country, but it isn't a quick detour from the highway. Allow about 3–4 hours up and 6–8 hours return.

Start at Fantail Falls car park. The track crosses the unbridged Haast River, then climbs very steeply through beech forest to the bush line. Expect a rough, rooted track and slippery mud on the descent. The river can rise after rain or snowmelt, including while you're at the hut, and may not be crossable on your return.

The hut has bunks, but you need to bring your sleeping bag, stove and fuel, cooking gear, food and a rubbish bag; pack all rubbish out. There is a pit toilet. The water tank can run dry in summer, especially December through February, so carry enough water. Book from October through May; winter stays from June through September are first come, first served.

Brewster Track ends at the hut. Brewster Glacier and Mount Armstrong are beyond it, but there is no maintained track to either; the ground beyond is serious alpine terrain. Most visitors should enjoy the views from the hut; go farther only with a qualified guide.
