Crucible Lake

Crucible Lake is a remote alpine lake high above Siberia Valley, tucked beneath Mount Alba’s glaciers and snowfields. It’s a standout side trip from Siberia Hut, but getting there means several river crossings and a rough climb. Allow most of a day; return estimates from the hut span about five to eight hours. This suits experienced backcountry walkers who are comfortable with unbridged crossings and loose rock.

The route crosses Crucible Stream, climbs a narrow bush spur, then reaches another river crossing before the open snow-grass basin. Poles lead through the upper basin, followed by a roughly 150-metre climb over a moraine wall of large rocks to the lake rim. It’s a steep, exposed finish, not a casual stroll.

Heavy rain can make the streams impassable, and avalanche debris may cross Crucible Valley from May through November. Check current track conditions before setting out; turn back if a crossing is high.

The rock walls around the lake rise into Mount Alba’s glaciers and snowfields, with the 2,360-metre peak above the basin. Floating ice can last into summer, sometimes into December. If there’s ice on the water, include a slab in the foreground with the cliff wall behind it to show the scale of the basin.

Tiny rockwren, or pīwauwau, are often seen among the large rocks at the lake outlet. Camping is not allowed in Crucible Basin, which protects its fragile alpine herb fields, so plan to return to Siberia Hut rather than stay beside the lake.

Siberia Hut is a serviced 20-bunk base with heating, mattresses and non-flush toilets. Its tap water is untreated and must be boiled; summer stays need to be booked. The hut is the overnight base for the lake side trip.
