Siberia Hut

Siberia Hut is a 20-bunk serviced hut on the floor of Siberia Valley at 630 m. It sits on the 56 km Gillespie Pass Circuit, an advanced 3–4 day tramp, and makes a useful base for a day trip to Lake Crucible. This is a backcountry destination, not a roadside stop: access means a substantial walk or pre-arranged air or jet-boat transport.

One approach from Young Hut crosses Gillespie Pass for 12 km and takes 6–8 hours. After the descent to Siberia Stream, the final stretch along the valley floor is about an easy hour to the hut. The circuit has serious river crossings that can become impassable after rain, and the track crosses avalanche terrain, usually from May through November. Go with backcountry crossing skills and check current conditions before setting out.

The hut has mattresses, heating and a wood burner, plus non-flush toilets. Bring your own sleeping bag, stove and fuel, cookware, toilet paper, rubbish bag, fire-starting supplies and torch. Tap water is untreated, so boil it before drinking. Bunks are booked ahead through the warmer season, roughly late October to April; outside that period they are first-come, first-served, with fees still applying. Camping is allowed outside the hut under separate fee and booking rules.

Lake Crucible, beneath Mount Alba, is a standout side trip from the hut. The route leaves the valley floor and climbs through forest and open alpine country to the lake's rocky outlet; tiny rockwrens sometimes show among the stones. The basin's alpine herb fields are fragile, so camping there is prohibited. Bring all you need for a self-contained backcountry stay: no cooking gear or gas is supplied.
