Guide
Historic View Terrace is one of Mount Rushmore's original viewing areas, along the Avenue of Flags and slightly apart from the busier Grand View Terrace. It gives you another place to stop for the four carved faces. Walk over as you make your way along the flag-lined approach.
The Avenue of Flags follows a road visitors once drove through the memorial. Today, the terrace is part of the pedestrian approach to the sculpture.
The flag avenue was created for the United States Bicentennial in 1976 after a visitor suggested it. Its 56 flags represent the 50 states, the District of Columbia, three territories and two commonwealths; they are arranged alphabetically along the walkway.
