Overview

About Tobacco Barn and Old Trace Drive

Why stop

  • Walk inside a preserved tobacco barn
  • Historic two-mile drive adds countryside views

Heads up

  • Old Trace Drive is narrow and excludes RVs and buses
  • The barn visit is brief, not a full museum
This is one of the quickest history payoffs on the Parkway. At milepost 401.4, a short trail leads to a tobacco barn built in 1959 for Leland Greenfield using timber grown on this same farm. Greenfield first raised tobacco here in 1932, and his family had held the land for a century before Tennessee bought it and deeded it to the Parkway in 1977. The exhibit uses that farm story to explain how a working Tennessee tobacco operation actually ran.

Before you go

Best time to go

Come in daylight. The barn, the signs, and the countryside views are the whole experience. Early morning or late afternoon gives softer light on the field and the weathered barn boards, and low sun through the barn slats photographs well. Crowds are rarely an issue, and most people walk right in without a wait.

From the parking area, a loop of about 10 minutes crosses a field to the barn. Inside, you can often see burley tobacco hanging to dry, since burley has to air-cure in the barn for four to six weeks before it can go to market. The barn interior, the light coming through the slatted walls, and the smell of curing leaf are the part people remember. The amount of tobacco on display can vary, so the building and interpretation still carry the visit.

Right next to the barn, Old Trace Drive runs two miles north along the general route of the original Old Natchez Trace. You can drive it, bike it, or walk it, and it gives a real sense of what a frontier road looked like in the early 1800s, with countryside views opening up along the way. Engineering and preservation work mean it does not trace the historic path foot for foot.

This one pairs a standing agricultural building you can walk into with a drivable segment of the historic route, so you get farm life and travel history in one short visit.

  • Vehicle limits matter on Old Trace Drive: the road is narrow with low-hanging limbs, and RVs and buses are not allowed. Low-clearance vehicles are also not recommended.
  • If you are in a big rig, park at the barn lot, do the walk, and skip the drive or walk part of it instead.
  • Old Trace Drive is one-way northbound, so plan it as a segment of your trip north rather than a there-and-back.
  • What you will find here: parking, including bus and RV parking at the barn, interpretive signs in the lot plus exhibits in the barn, and good photo views of the field and the weathered barn.
  • Read the boards in the parking area first. They set up what you are looking at inside the barn.

It is a compact stop, not a museum, and you can see everything in 15 to 20 minutes plus the drive. If the barn happens to be bare, the visit leans more on the signs than on the sight of curing tobacco.
