Bobs Hut is a standard eight-bunk Department of Conservation hut in the West Matakitaki Valley, a remote corner of Nelson Lakes National Park. At 830 metres, it sits on a broad river flat at the edge of beech forest, with Mt Maling and the Spenser Mountains rising beyond. It makes sense as an overnight shelter on a trip through the valley, not as a drive-up visit. East Matakitaki Hut is about two hours away on foot; Downies Hut is about six.

Access to the Matakitaki Valley is through Mt Ella Station; the parking area and orientation panel are opposite the cowshed. Follow the orange track markers. This is steep, rugged country, and heavy rain can flood rivers and make crossings dangerous. One account describes crossing Mt Maling Stream on the final approach, so conditions matter here.

The hut is non-bookable and first come, first served. Plan for a standard hut ticket or an eligible Backcountry Hut Pass. There are eight bunks, a toilet and an open fireplace; potable water is not confirmed, so do not count on a treated supply.

The hut was built in 1958 as shelter for government deer cullers and was first called Top Matakitaki Hut. It began as a six-bunk design, then gained two bunks and a porch in 1987. A 2020 refurbishment brought a new roof, fresh paint, a woodshed and a small deck while retaining the original four-pane windows.

Nobody has pinned down who Bob was, or whether there was a Bob at all. That small mystery has outlasted the hut's first name.
