Trail guide
East Matakitaki Track is a one-way backcountry tramp from the West Matakitaki River walkwire to East Matakitaki Hut. The mapped leg is 4.3 km (2.7 miles) along marked track through beech forest; reach the walkwire by connecting tramping routes, not by driving to a roadside trailhead. Route records give sharply different times for this same leg, from 1.5 to five hours. Allow about three hours for the measured segment, with extra time for the approach and stops, and confirm the route plan before setting out.
Expect a natural, sometimes boggy track with stream crossings. A three-wire bridge crosses the East Matakitaki River near the hut. Take care on the rough tread and assess water levels before crossing; the current bridge and river conditions have not been verified.
East Matakitaki Hut sits in a tussock clearing beside the river at about 920 metres. From the river bank, include the red-roofed hut in your frame with the river and mountain backdrop. It is a standard six-bunk hut, first come and not bookable. An overnight stay requires a Backcountry Hut Ticket or Backcountry Hut Pass. Bring the food you need for the walk and any overnight stay. Dogs and other domestic animals are prohibited in the national park.
The hut began as a New Zealand Forest Service building in 1960–61 and was renovated by Backcountry Trust in 2020. It remains a practical stop in a remote river catchment rather than a roadside destination.
From East Matakitaki Hut, DOC lists Bobs Hut as a two-hour walk and Downies Hut as six hours. Those are separate onward legs, not part of the 4.3 km stored here. The walkwire approach and any further hut travel need their own time and route plan.
