Overview
A local-favorite rim walk rather than a single deck, Beauty Mountain Overlook strings together sandstone cliff perches more than 1,000 feet above the New River. It feels wild and quiet—no signage, no railings, just huge gorge views and the sound of rapids far below.
The Trail & Views
Expect a short, mostly flat stroll along the cliffline with small ups and downs. Unofficial paths braid and rejoin, leading to several overlooks; Rams Head is the classic viewpoint with a wide, 180-degree sweep of the gorge. On clear days you can spot river bends, rail lines, and even hear seasonal cascades after heavy rain. Dogs are allowed; keep them leashed and close near the edges.
Getting There & Parking
Access is via narrow back roads near Edmond/Lansing, with spotty cell service—download directions ahead of time. There’s no formal lot; visitors park carefully along Beauty Mountain Road near a sharp left bend or by the Buckhorn Rd/Beauty Mountain Rd corner under the power lines. Do not block gates or driveways, and don’t wander onto private property; some nearby areas post “No Trespassing.”
What to Expect (Amenities)
This is an undeveloped overlook: no restrooms, water, trash cans, or signs. Pack out everything you bring in, and be prepared for a dirt path start.
Best Time to Visit
Sunset is the show—many overlooks face west, bathing the gorge in warm light. Parking is scarce and fills near golden hour, so arrive early (especially on weekends) or aim for midweek evenings. If you linger for twilight, bring a headlamp for the walk back.
Safety & Etiquette
The cliffs are unfenced with sheer drop-offs. Watch your footing on sandstone edges, especially when wet or at dusk. Keep kids and pets close, stay on established paths, and leave the rock graffiti-free. Pack out all waste—there are no facilities here.
