Guide
Skagit General Store is a historic shop on Main Street in Newhalem, the company town along State Route 20. Pick up drinks, snacks, homemade fudge, or camping and picnic supplies. Think of it as a quick treat-and-supplies stop, not a meal stop.
The store opened in 1922 as an employee commissary for workers and families building the Skagit hydroelectric project. It is one of four original construction-camp buildings still standing on Main Street. Newhalem dates to 1918 and was once home to more than 300 workers and their families. The store opened to the public in the 1940s, and its building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Old Number Six, a restored steam locomotive, is right beside the store. Picnic tables, a playground, and restrooms are nearby there, so this works well as part of a short wander around Newhalem. The restrooms are nearby at Old Number Six, not inside the shop.
