Rock Cabin

Overview

Rock Cabin is a tiny backcountry relic with big character: a three‑sided log shelter where the cliff itself serves as the fourth wall. Built in the 1920s by trapper John Dayo and listed on the National Register of Historic Places (1989), it’s a rare peek into early backcountry life in these mountains.

What You’ll See

Expect a snug, handmade structure with saddle‑notched corners and a wood‑shake roof tucked right up against the rock. It’s small—about 9.5 feet wide at the front and 15 feet deep—so you’ll spend more time admiring its craftsmanship and setting than lingering inside.

Where It Is

You’ll find Rock Cabin along the Fisher Creek Trail, south of Diablo Lake. This is a true backcountry stop, not roadside—plan for a hike to reach it.

How to Visit

Hike the Fisher Creek Trail and keep an eye out for the cabin near the base of the cliff. There are no amenities here, so bring everything you need and pack it back out. It’s a look‑but‑don’t‑touch kind of place—treat the structure gently so it lasts another century.

Why It’s Special

Plenty of old cabins dot the Cascades, but few are literally built into the landscape. The cliff‑as‑wall design makes this one a memorable little time capsule.
