Overview

About Pickering Castle

Why stop

  • Motte-top views across Pickering and the countryside

Heads up

  • Compact visit if you want a full-day castle experience
  • Uneven ground and steep stairs limit some routes
This is a proper Norman motte-and-bailey castle you can read in a single walk: a high, steep-sided earth mound ringed by a ditch, crowned with a stone shell keep, and wrapped by curtain walls with three towers still standing close to full height. Royal kings used it for centuries, less as a front-line fortress than as a hunting base and country retreat, and the layout still makes that comfortable, sheltered role obvious.

Plan your stop

Before you go

Best time to go

Early in the day or later on, and midweek if you can manage it, gives you more breathing room on the motte stairway and kinder light for photos of the towers. Wear sturdy footwear for the uneven ground, steps and the climb, bring a layer because the top of the mound catches the wind, and pack lunch if you fancy using the picnic benches rather than heading straight back into town.

Access, parking and facilities

  • Parking: an official car park sits roughly 75m from the entrance with a loose gravel surface. Some accessible spaces are positioned nearer the entrance.
  • Accessibility: there is level access at the main entrance, accessible parking, an accessible public toilet and a wheelchair available on site. Inside, though, the ground is uneven with steps in places, and not all routes around the castle are suitable for wheelchair users, so plan for partial rather than full-site access.
  • On site: male and female toilets, a shop with gifts, books, toys and hot and cold drinks, and picnic areas on the grass.
  • Dogs: welcome on short leads.

“One of Pickering's best surprises is inside its parish church: pictures painted across the nave walls around fourteen seventy. Look for Saint George confronting the dragon, and a sequence telling Saint Catherine's story.”

  • The motte and keep: a stairway climbs the mound to the shell keep, and the reward is a panoramic sweep over Pickering and the surrounding countryside.
  • Curtain walls and towers: stonework that replaced the earlier wooden outer defences during the 13th and 14th centuries. The Mill Tower once held a prison.
  • Chapel exhibition: small but worth the time, with medieval arrowheads, a knife blade, spurs and manacles on display.
  • Grounds: grassy interior with picnic benches. Over 45 wildflower species have been recorded on site, and kestrels sometimes nest here, so it is quietly good for a slow lap of the walls.
Be honest about the scaleThis is a compact site.

This is a compact site. Most people see everything they want in around an hour, and if you are expecting a vast castle complex with room after room to explore, you may find it modest. Treat it as a focused historic stop, ideally paired with a wander around Pickering itself, and it lands very well. There is no audio commentary, so the guidebook helps if you want the full story behind the earthworks and phases of building.
