Trail guide
Start and finish at Haygate car park and follow the teal markers with white arrows the whole way round. The path threads through the forest on a continuous circuit, linking earth tracks and forestry road before returning to the car park, so there is no need to retrace your steps. The highlight on the way is the Lumberjills memorial, which commemorates the women who worked in British forests during the Second World War and gives the walk a clear focal point partway round.
The route opens out to views across the riggs and dales of Dalby and Ellerburn, with mixed woodland habitats along the way. Elevation sampling along the stored route ranges from roughly 137 m to 167 m, so expect gentle undulation and a modest rise back toward the car park rather than any sustained climb. There is no scrambling and no serious exposure.
Surfaces are a mix of earth tracks, forest road and compacted gravel path. The operator notes the route may be slippery in wet weather, so boots or shoes with decent grip are sensible. A spell of dry weather is the better bet if you want firmer footing and clearer views over the dales.
Park at Haygate car park inside Dalby Forest. General access to the forest is from the A169, and the visitor centre postcode is YO18 7LT, where trail maps are available. Once you are at Haygate, the teal waymarking does the rest.
Dogs are allowed. Keep them under effective control and follow any on-site instructions. The route is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs because of the mixed track surfaces.
