Enchanted Valley Chalet

Enchanted Valley Chalet is a two-and-a-half-story log building in Olympic National Park’s remote Enchanted Valley, reached on foot along the East Fork Quinault River Trail. It’s a historic landmark, not a place to stay: the building closed in 2013, and hikers see it from the trail just after the high bridge. This is a destination for backpackers who want the whole wilderness trip, not a quick stop.

From Graves Creek Trailhead, it’s 13 miles each way and usually a two- to three-day out-and-back. The trail follows the river through old-growth forest and creek crossings before opening into a broad valley beneath steep walls. The chalet comes into view shortly after the high bridge, beside the established camp area. Give yourself time to take in the valley; the building is the landmark, but the setting is what makes the effort pay off.

Olympic Recreation Company built the chalet in 1931 as seasonal wilderness lodging. The park bought it in 1953, and it later served as a public shelter and ranger station; during World War II it was also an aircraft warning station. The building closed in 2013 after years of limited maintenance and vandalism. In 2014, crews moved it 100 feet away from the eroding riverbank as the Quinault changed course.

The valley’s steep walls, waterfalls and wildflower meadows make the chalet’s clearing a memorable setting. For a photo, include some of that high-walled landscape around the building instead of filling the frame with the logs alone. Spring and early summer bring waterfalls down the slopes, though spring snow can linger on the high bridge.

Overnight backcountry camping requires a wilderness permit, and bear canisters are required in the valley. Two privies serve the camp area. Water comes from the river and tributaries, so treat it before drinking; there’s no developed water tap at the chalet. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
