“Up ahead is Kalaloch Beach Four, where I'd stop for the rock layers as well as the tide pools. North of the beach access, tilted sandstone and shale meet much younger, level glacial gravel.”

Kalaloch Beach 4 is a scenic beach on Olympic's southwest coast, reached from US 101 in the Kalaloch area. Its signature is tidepooling: at low water, pools can hold sea stars and colorful anemones. A short bluff overlook gives you the coast without the rough beach descent; go down to the sand only if you're comfortable with uneven footing.

A flat, graveled spur runs about 250 feet from the trailhead to an accessible viewpoint looking along the coast. The main path descends through coastal forest toward a small creek and bridge, then reaches a rocky ledge above the beach. The last step to sand is a steep, uneven drop of roughly four feet, and erosion can change the entry. If balance or mobility is a concern, the viewpoint is still a worthwhile stop.

Plan for low tide to see the pools, and check a tide chart before walking alongshore; incoming water can make parts of the coast impassable. For a broad coastal frame, use the bluff viewpoint and let the shore fill the view. At beach level, a tide pool or rock outcrop in the foreground shows what makes this stop distinctive.

The notable rocks north of the access are tilted sandstone and shale, laid down by underwater sediment flows, with younger, horizontal glacial gravel above. That sharp junction records uplift, erosion and later glacial deposits; geologists call it an angular unconformity. About 16 million years of rock record are missing at the boundary. Walk roughly 0.2 miles north along the beach to find folded layers as well.

The wider Kalaloch coast includes rocky and sandy intertidal habitat, kelp beds, reefs and offshore islands. Common murres and tufted puffins nest on rocky islands, while western gulls and bald eagles feed or nest along the southern coast. Sea otters returned to Washington waters after reintroductions from Alaska in 1969 and 1970; the protected waters now support them alongside flourishing kelp forests.

The paved trailhead lot has more than 80 spaces, including five reserved for accessible parking, plus two vault toilets and a picnic table. The overlook and vault toilets are accessible. No potable water or food service was found at the trailhead, so bring what you need; Kalaloch Lodge, a separate stop several miles south, has a restaurant and camp store.
