Lake Quinault Lodge is a historic hotel on the south shore of Lake Quinault in the adjoining Olympic National Forest. It makes a natural base for the Olympic Peninsula's Quinault rain-forest country. The long, shingled lodge, grand fireplace, and lawn beside the water give it an old Northwest lodge feel. Choose it for atmosphere, lake views, and dining on site; most rooms are low-tech, with no phones or TVs.
The Roosevelt Dining Room is the lodge's table-service restaurant, serving seasonal Northwest cooking with panoramic views of Lake Quinault and the surrounding mountains. Reservations are recommended. Menus and hours change, so check current details if you're planning a meal there.
The lodge's lawn and lakefront make the setting easy to enjoy without a long walk. From the lawn, frame the long building and its chairs against the conifers; turn toward the water for forested hills across the lake. The lodge and shoreline are the photo opportunities here, rather than a separate hike.
The lodge opened on August 18, 1926. Quinault Medicine woman Sally (James) Freeman, a friend of co-owner Stella McNeil, gave the opening blessing. Historical accounts also record Freeman's basket-weaving demonstrations and cultural performances by her family for early lodge visitors. President Franklin D. Roosevelt visited in 1937; the on-site dining room bears his name.
Most guest rooms lack phones and televisions. The lakeside setting is the main draw, while room condition, comfort, dining, and service can vary. It is best when the building and surroundings are part of why you came; check room details with the lodge before booking if you need particular features.
