Lake Quinault Museum is a compact local-history museum on Lake Quinault’s south shore, housed in the old Quinault Post Office. It’s a good stop if you want a little context for the people who have lived and worked in this rainforest country. Admission is by donation, and the museum sits beside the Quinault Mercantile, within walking distance of Lake Quinault Lodge.

The Great Room’s standout objects are Hoquat and Quinault, two cedar dugout racing canoes more than 20 feet long. They’re on loan from the James family and have been in that family for generations. Other rooms cover Quinault basket weaving, logging, homesteading, veterans, kitchen life and home arts. There’s also a schoolroom bell and a gallery on a 1937 Skyline camping trip.

If a volunteer host is there, leave time for a conversation. Visitors often mention the personal local stories as a highlight of this small collection.

Fit it into your dayThe museum keeps a summer season, with winter visits by appointment.

The museum keeps a summer season, with winter visits by appointment. Published schedules differ on the season’s exact edges, so check the current dates before making a special trip. Allow about half an hour to look around. Some visitors are offered cookies or cake by the host; treat that as a bonus, not a café or a dependable meal.
