Crane Point Museum and Nature Center

Crane Point is a 63-acre hardwood hammock preserve, museum and nature center in Marathon. The campus brings together shaded trails, tidal water, historic houses, gardens and a wild-bird center. Keep it for a proper visit if you like Keys history or nature walks; it’s a ticketed attraction, not a quick roadside view.

The short orientation film is a useful first stop. Ask staff when the next volunteer-led golf-cart tour leaves if you want to see more of the property or its historic houses; tours run on a schedule, and visitors report that house access can depend on timing. There’s also a small gift shop, shaded picnic areas and parking. Plan your meal elsewhere if you want more than a picnic snack.

The trail network and wooden walkways cover about 2.5 miles through hardwood and thatch-palm hammock, mangroves, tidal lagoons and wetland ponds. The footbridge looking over Florida Bay is a particularly good place to pause. Parts of the path are described as rocky or crushed stone, so expect an uneven walk rather than a smooth promenade. Formal accessibility details weren’t available; check with the center if you need a specific surface or step-free route.

People have used this site for more than 700 years. George and Olivia Adderley lived here from 1903 to 1949, making charcoal and gathering sponges to sell. Francis and Mary Crane bought the property in 1949 and added a causeway to Big Rachel Key. The Adderley House is a highlight, but sources disagree on whether it was built in 1903 or 1904, so the exact year is best left open.

The Florida Keys Land Trust formed to protect the Keys’ hardwood hammocks and bought Crane Point in 1989, when homes and a shopping center were planned for the land. The organization later became the Florida Keys Land and Sea Trust; the preserved campus is a tangible reminder of what could have replaced this patch of habitat.

The collection includes an approximately 600-year-old dugout canoe and shipwreck artifacts, among them a Bellarmine jug dating to about 1580. A simulated coral-reef cave gives the exhibits a more hands-on feel, and the handcrafted copper entrance doors show Florida Keys sea life.

Four butterfly gardens and the Marathon Wild Bird Center add more than a walk through the trees. For birding, look across the different habitats: seabirds around Rachel Key, waders along Rachel Creek and songbirds in the hammock. Binoculars may be available to borrow. The campus also offers a fish-pedicure tidal pool and a separate kayak-and-snorkel outing into shallow bay water and mangrove islands; treat the paddle as its own activity and check its availability ahead.
