Best time to go

Overnight camping is allowed May 1 to September 30 with a Parks Canada backcountry permit; adult visitors also need a park entry pass. July and August are busiest across the islands, while May, June and September usually see fewer campers. Wind, fog, swell and tidal currents can make the boat trip hazardous, so this is best for paddlers prepared for coastal navigation.

More about Clarke Island Campground

A stop for a paddle tripClarke Island Campground is a designated backcountry camp on Clarke Island in the Broken Group…

Clarke Island Campground is a designated backcountry camp on Clarke Island in the Broken Group Islands. You can only get here by boat, so think of it as an overnight on a paddling trip, not a drive-up camp. A paddler described white sand, soft grass behind the beach, and large conifers around the camping ground. The exact landing and tent area aren't clearly marked, but that account gives you a sense of the island setting.

Bring your drinking waterThere’s no potable water on the islands.

There’s no potable water on the islands. Bring 4 to 6 litres per person per day; natural freshwater in Barkley Sound is unreliable. Designated camps have solar composting outhouses, but there’s no garbage pickup, so pack everything out.
