Jasper Forest Overlook

Jasper Forest Overlook is a roadside viewpoint between Agate Bridge and Crystal Forest. It looks across a broad basin with a high concentration of petrified wood among pale, fluted badlands. The draw is the sweep of the fossil bed from above; the overlook itself is not a walk among the logs.

This is an easy place to pause on the park drive. There is parking for cars and buses or RVs, interpretive information, and a trailhead; the overlook is identified as wheelchair accessible. If you want more than the panorama, treat the historic road route as a separate outing rather than improvising a descent from the rim.

The Jasper Forest bed is about 216 million years old, and pieces of petrified wood continue to erode out of it. The same bed caps exposures across the area, including Blue Mesa, Agate Bridge, and Crystal Forest. From the overlook, the logs are part of a much larger scene of washes and striped rock.

Jasper Forest was first known as First Forest because it was the first large accumulation of petrified wood reached from Adamana. The Civilian Conservation Corps built a road through the forest in the early 1930s; it was also called the First Forest–Eagle Nest Rock Road. That road closed on October 8, 1965, to reduce illegal removal of petrified wood, and the current overlook was completed that same month. Leave the fossil wood where it is.

The historic road alignment can be explored on the separate Jasper Forest Off the Beaten Path route. Accounts differ about informal paths down from the overlook, so do not assume there is a maintained descent from the viewing area to the logs. Check the route details before setting out.

The broad panorama is the signature view. Keep a near fluted ridge at one edge of the frame and leave the open basin and distant rim in view; a tight crop of rock loses the sense of how much fossil bed lies below.
