Hamilili Dune

Hamilili Dune is a small red-sand dune beside Hamilili Point, the mile-24 pullout on the park’s main road. It’s a distinct short stop if you want a close look at the area’s red sand; the point itself opens onto a broader view of layered badlands, and more dunes sit nearby.

From Hamilili Point, the overlook takes in the Martha’s Butte and Jim Camp Wash beds of the Chinle Formation. The brown bands are younger Bidahochi Formation. A mammal fossil found near the point in 2009 was the park’s only non-Triassic-aged vertebrate fossil.

Use Hamilili Point as your reference, but confirm the way to the dune before setting out: the exact foot route and walking distance aren’t specified. For a photo, put the red sand and clumps of grass in the foreground and let the pale, banded badlands fill the background.
